Apparently it seems that this is an age old fix for even Windows XP systems. If you venture to the registry key above by doing the following steps:

Click on the start menu.
Select run or in the search box and enter "regedit".
Expand:
HKey_Local_Machine System CurrentControlSetControl Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

In the contents of this folder you should see two sub folder
0000
Properties
In those subfolders you should see files
0000 * Driverdate,DriverDateData,DriverDesc etc.
Properties * Driverdate etc.
Delete the contents of these folders, along with the contents of the main folder "{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"
Once this is done you should see remaining in these folders (Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
If you see these you have successfully removed the files above.
Once this is done please Restart the Computer.
Once the computer is booted up proceed to My Computer (Windows XP) or Computer (Windows Vista) to find the CD/DVD Drive There.
If you do not see this you may need to either Guide the customer through a factory restore or advise them if it is out of warranty to take the computer/laptop to a local repairer.
